Likes:
-swimming, especially in the sea
-rain (being outside when it’s raining)

Dislikes:
-places without (large, open) water
-fighting – it hurts people

Strengths:
-swimming (very fast / long distances without becoming tired)
-can hold her breath longer than others
-can breathe under water (because she’s in mermaid form then – every time she goes under water with more than half of her body, her legs become a fish tail)

Weakness:
-not that good in hand-to-hand fighting
-avoids danger and fights, if possible
-cannot stay long in dry areas

Has Trouble With: Dry places
Greatest Fear:
No water
Goals:
live her life and be happy, and hopefully find someone who wants to marry a mermaid… (the tribe people respect her for the things she’s doing for them, but they’re also a bit afraid of her)

Favorite Foods:
nuts
Hated Foods: Fish
Favorite Color: All shades of blue
Hated Color: red
Favorite Animal: starfish

Family Members/ Siblings:

*Real mother & father are merpeople

Real mother: Maji (means “water” in Swahili language)

Real father: Kall (means “cold” in Swedish – he was from the Northern seas)

Raised by the tribe, played with the children of the tribe. The family she lived with consisted of father Kasi (means “fast, quick, speed” in Swahili), mother Siasa (means “careful, meticulous, orderly, accuracy, attentiveness” in Swahili) and 4 children (3 boys, 1 girl), ranging in age.

Friends: Tribe children – especially her ‘sister’ and ‘brothers’ (but mostly sister) , and in the sea she likes to play with the starfish. She has not yet met any other mermaids, because she never gets far away from the African shore.

School: She learned the things she needed to know from her mother, and later from the Rain Maker as well.

Current Residence: Kenya / tribe

Work: helper of the Rain Maker

Personality:

Says what she thinks of things, but she thinks about it first.

It’s not that difficult for her to make choices – she know what she wants.

She’s patient and it’s okay for her to wait. Mermaids instinctively know they have a longer lifespan than humans.

She tries to be nice to everyone, to get them to entirely accept her, but she’s not sacrificing herself for others.

When someone she loves is killed, she first cries a lot, but then starts acting as if she doesn’t care anymore. She wants to fight then. Revenge. Doesn’t matter who she takes revenge on, youma or someone else. But as soon as she gets the chance to kill, she doesn’t. She runs away to be alone, to cry. All the killing… it’s just too much. She goes to the sea, to the water, to calm down at moments like this, when she’s very upset… Her first reaction is not the way she would normally behave, but large emotional impacts make her a bit violent… But after a while this feeling fades again.

*note on human/mermaid senshi forms:

-She uses the transformation phrase under ‘human form’ when she’s on the land, the phrase under ‘mermaid form’ when she’s in the sea. But when she’s in the water and goes onto the land, she doesn’t have to use her other transformation phrase, because she stays in senshi form (same with going from land to water).

Name: Starfish Strike

Type: Water-energy, attack

How: say “Starfish Strike!”

Visual Description: A 5-point-star-shaped-light rushes towards the enemy. This blueish ‘light’ is actually water-energy.

Result: destroys enemies, but if an ally is in the line of attack, it will hit that person. It can’t move around it.

Success Rate (%): 60 %

Name: Seaweed Wrap

Type: Water, defensive

How: say “Seaweed Wrap!”

Visual Description: Strands of seaweed appear from her hand and wrap themselves around the enemy (or something else)

Result: The seaweed is wrapped around the target. It can’t move (for a while, at least, till it manages to break the seaweed)

Important Note: Can be directed at every (living) creature, but not at a ghost or something (not ‘transparent’). This seaweed is rather strong.

Success Rate (%): 80 % [although the time the seaweed will stay wrapped depends on the strength of the enemy]

History:

Maji (mermaid) was pregnant and fleeing for a very strong sea monster. The father, Kall, had been fighting it and defending them, but was killed (he had said to Maji that she should save the baby. That he could fight instead of her, Sailor Flyde (senshi powers are passed on from mother to child), because she was pregnant, and the baby was more important).

Maji decided it would be safer to give birth to the child on the land, so the baby girl was born on a beach that is now part of Kenya.

When mermaids go out of the water, there fish tail changes into legs with small scales (skin-colored) on them instead of hairs [like humans have]. So they still need regular drops of water when they’re on the land.

The girl was born with legs (because her mother was on the land – when a mermaid child is born in the water, it gets a fish tail), and the mother went back into the sea after she had uttered a cry to alarm the land-people. Her child would be safer on the land.

Maji died soon after, because in the line of the mermaid-senshi, there could only be one living girl at a time. The baby girl would die as well, as soon as she had given birth to a girl, who was destined to become the next Sailor Flyde.

Mutanu had a different skin color than all the other people (who were very dark brown), and her skin also felt different. As she was growing up, the tribe noticed the girl was a mermaid. They know about divinities and spirits of nature, and a mermaid was viewed as one of them. That was why they couldn’t really accept Mutanu as one of them – she would never be entirely part of the tribe.

Because of her water powers, she got to help the Rain Maker, a wise old man who had great knowledge of all things to do with water.

Every so often Mutanu went into the sea, where she changed into a mermaid. She liked to swim, but she felt as if she belonged on the land, in her tribe who could never accept her as one of them. In the sea, she never travelled far away from the coast (max. a few miles). She liked to talk to the starfish.

One time, when she was rather far away from the coast she felt a dark presence coming towards her. The starfish she was swimming with, were starting to panick. Mutanu decided to swim back to where she had come from, but the presence was blocking her way. The only choice was to swim farther away from the known sea and her tribe. She tried to suppress her panicking feelings, reflected by the starfish. Taking the starfish with her, she swam away as fast as she could. But it seemed as if the presence neared faster than she could swim…

After a long time fast swimming, being afraid, and having thought about what that thing could be – it felt… evil… – she turned her head around, while still swimming. This looking-back slowed her down a little bit, but when she saw the sea-monster she froze. Holding the starfish against her body the sight of the monster (who killed her father and led her mother to flee) triggered the knowledge of the line of mermaid senshi she descended from to reveal itself to Mutanu – who now knew how to transform into Sailor Flyde.
